Sacrifice, the new album by Andrew Nolan out March 5th on Closed Casket Activities.
After recent releases with Full of Hell and The Body Nolan returns to his early 90s pirate radio roots and brings us eight songs of industrialized dub and hip hop, initially written at home then loaded onto samplers and road-tested and reconfigured at various sound systems and live shows across the UK and Canada throughout 2024 and 2025.
"The idea was to reframe sounds and rhythms of everyday life within each piece and to repurpose environmental sounds and sounds of unwanted error into the album" Nolan explains, "On There's Worse Things Than Serpents the track really took shape after performing it live a few times, when in Bristol, England I played a show in the crypt of a 14th century church and the sound system was so loud it took down part of the ceiling and shook the stained glass windows so violently we thought they were going to shatter. Thankfully I managed to get recordings of these and reincorporated them back into the final version of the song."
Although the sounds of structural damage, electromagnetic interference, household appliances, environmental sounds, and samplers dying mid-live performance feature heavily on Sacrifice this is not a noise album and has as much to do with hip hop and dub traditions as it does noise and industrial leanings. "The roots of hip hop and dub share commonalities with the roots of industrial music, that of repurposing cheap consumer electronics to create new sounds and forms from preexisting material. In my head all sounds and techniques are related and genre boundaries are extremely porous," says Nolan by way of explaining his disinterest in following a single path in music.
Sacrifice is mastered by Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, JK Flesh, Jesu), with artwork from Rich Carson (Unyielding Love, Canopic Ire tattoos, featured on Isolation Man apparel), and features UK drum and bass/ hip hop producer Karkossyn (UVB76 Records) on the song Our Voices Are Already the Wind.
