If you ask me the early 2000's began a really challenging moment for good, tricky, angular emo bands of a certain ilk.
The marketing machine was beginning to be dominated by bad haircuts and bright colors. Rags like Alternative Press determined what was cool. The bands that ultimately stood the test of time weren't getting the shine that they deserved in the moment. A few gems were almost lost, known and appreciated by small and loyal fanbases and relegated to boxes of old CDs in a closet.
Counterfit is a band that tells that story. A genuinely fuckin' cool band who didn't quite fit in with the 90's emo nostalgia world and wasn't quite shiny and glossy enough for the AP emo world that was beginning to see success. At the time the bands I played in all felt a closer kinship to what Counterfit was - A nod to a San Diego sound spearheaded by the likes of No Knife and Drive Like Jehu with a modern Northeast touch of contemporaries like Taking Back Sunday, Finch or Hot Rod Circuit.
From Finish To Starting Line was their often overlooked initial EP effort - Five powerhouse songs originally released on CD by Negative Progression in 2001. This EP laid the groundwork for their eventual LP a couple years later where the vision was eventually fully realized. That said, if you're a fan of the band, you know this EP is THE ONE.
Here we are almost 25 years later and able to bring this EP back to life. Given a brand new layout using assets from the original CDEP and remixed, remastered and resequenced for vinyl.
