An Open Letter From The Wives Of Pet Symmetry Regarding Their New Album Big Symmetry
Well, we never thought we'd see the day, but here we are. Our husbands have written an entire album about love. Yes, you read that right. Love. Big Love. An ode to love in all forms.
For years, it’s been catchy rock anthems, sarcastic jingles, and songs that make you wonder if they even know what a healthy relationship is. Big Symmetry is the first record where our boys put their emotional rollercoaster of angst aside and focused on the things they actually care about. From friends, to adventures, to (yes, even us) their wives, this album is all about the stuff that makes their hearts so BIG.
In early 2021, Pet Symmetry planned on promoting their album Future Suits, but found themselves with a problem: As the world tried to figure out how to live with Covid-19, their touring plans were put on indefinite hold. In true Pet Symmetry fashion, they saw this as an opportunity to really make the most of their downtime. They packed up their gear, booked a remote cabin in the woods of Makanda Illinois and started working on a new album. Just the boys, some psychedelics, a whole lot of snow, a deck of cards, and a t-shirt prank.
Big Symmetry was born.
But let’s be clear: Our boys didn’t initially set out to write an album full of big love songs. At first they just wanted to hang out with each other and write an album that rocked. An album with big sounds, lots of energy, and songs that are fun to play. But leave it to Pet Symmetry to unintentionally create an album that radiates love. Love for each other, love for life, and for all the weird, wonderful connections that make living it worthwhile.
As the wives of Pet Symmetry, we can confidently say that Big Symmetry is more than just a loud album with non-stop hooks. It’s a love letter to everything they care about, ranging from big milestones, to everyday moments, to inanimate objects.
The track Big Engagement talks about the whirlwind of excitement and anxiety that comes with proposing and getting engaged, while Big Island reminisces about vacationing in Hawaii. There is also a track that reflects the pain of losing a close friend in Big Steve along with another that’s a bittersweet ode to an often overlooked band member, their old tour van Vanessa. In the song Big Mileage we find a testament to the deep affection for the van’s perfect mix of reliability and quirks (it also fails to mention her pungent smells of old fast food wrappers and spilled coffee). And then there’s the song, Big Barker, about Evan Weiss’s (neighbors) dog, Charlie Barker, whose cheeky side-eye and undeniable charm became the inspiration for one of the album’s most lighthearted tracks.
Pet Symmetry went big - literally and figuratively - with Big Symmetry. Our husbands might not have set out to write an album about love, but somehow that’s exactly what they did. It’s a record that captures the energy of three longtime friends pouring their hearts into something bigger than themselves. Big Symmetry is big on heart and big on sound. And, like being in love, it rocks. Big time.
With love,
Alex, Delia & Samantha (The Wives of Pet Symmetry)
